Just when you thought that the courts and the government hit rock bottom with policies that impact all of us, along came the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision legalizing homosexual marriage. We were stunned that a court in America could declare that "marriage" between same-sex individuals is a guaranteed right under any state constitution. We understand that homosexual activist groups are rushing to prepare similar suits in numerous states across the country.

I spent the last week talking to reporters and discussing the issue on national television. I emphasized that the voters will now have to decide whether the country should change the definition of marriage or continue our efforts to see that more children in America are raised in a home with a mother and a father, which has always been the foundation of our society.

This ruling is contrary to the teachings of the Church and diametrically opposed to the will of 60% of the voters. It demonstrates the only way to stop the movement to redefine marriage is to pass an amendment to the US Constitution. That is why Your Catholic Voice has joined an effort to support HJR 56, the Federal Marriage Amendment, in the US House of Representatives. It will take a tremendous effort of prayer and hard work to make this happen.

This ruling clearly shifts the debate into the political arena. We have heard from the Massachusetts Supreme Court, feminists and the well-financed and well-organized homosexual interest groups. Now, we are about to hear from the silent majority of the United States, as the debate about homosexual marriages shifts to the U.S. presidential election and this constitutional amendment.

Homosexual activists are going to try to make this court decision a human rights issue and appeal to fairness in each of us. But nothing could be further from the truth. The Church correctly teaches us that "respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions."

Our Church and our values are under attack today. Marriage and the family are fundamental institutions from which our country gains its strength and character. The main question now is, will we get involved and fight for faith and what we believe is best for our nation?
