The Federal Marriage Amendment would:
- Prevent the U.S. Congress and state legislatures from creating same sex marriage
- Prevent federal and state courts from imposing same sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships as they did in Massachusetts.
- Prevent states from being forced to recognize domestic partnership or civil union from another state.

FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT (H.J.Res. 56) (SJ Res 26)
Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups
